About Zhang Kun, the winner of the 11th “Chinese Medical Doctor Award”
Excellent Medical Skills and Benevolent Heart for Patients in Thirty Years
After working in clinical orthopaedic trauma for 32 years, Zhang Kun has operated more than 10,000 cases of various types of orthopaedic trauma surgery in total. He has profound attainments in complex limb fracture surgery, pelvic and acetabular fracture surgery, treatment of surgical complications, treatment of nonunion, bone defect and bone infection, sports injury, reconstruction of joint ligament injury, hip and total knee arthroplasty, senile fracture and osteoporotic fracture, staging treatment strategy of open fracture, prevention of deep venous thrombosis for patients with lower limb fracture, treatment of severe trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.
He developed a single anterior approach to solve complex acetabular fractures, minimally invasive surgical technology to treat complex pelvic fractures, loop plate technology to solve complex elbow fractures and other technologies, filling the gap in Northwest China and even the whole country.
His promotion and implementation of prevention of deep venous thrombosis in patients with lower limb fracture effectively reduced the mortality and disability rate of patients, and the staging treatment strategy of open fracture effectively reduced the postoperative complications of patients, which greatly brought good news to patients and provided the intelligence support and technical guarantee for the development of Orthopaedic Trauma Department in Xi’an Honghui Hospital.
In his clinical work, Comrade Zhang Kun, who is diligent in learning and thinking, has been diligently exploring the optimization of orthopaedic treatment methods. He spends most of his time studying in the hospital office and often followed up patients in the ward. Under many social titles and heavy work, he always insists on the individual specialist clinic and operates complicated surgery.
Droma Unwin, a 12-year-old Tibetan girl, was facing the brutal reality of amputation when she was rescued from the ruins. When receiving the task of treating and curing Droma, Comrade Zhang Kun held medical record seminars again and again, carefully prepared limb salvage operation plan, and carried out limb salvage surgery for her three times. Sometimes he stayed up all night without any sleeping, and challenged his physical limit only for treating patients. In this battlefield without smoke of gunpowder, he composed a revolutionary song for earthquake relief together with many medical personnel. After successful surgery and rehabilitation training, Droma was able to carry out weight-bearing and functional exercises by the time she was discharged from hospital. Today, she not only walks and lives like ordinary people, but also has been a university student smoothly.
Comrade Zhang Kun not only requires clinical medical staff to be meticulous, but also takes the lead in serving the masses and relieving the patients wholeheartedly. Adhering to the principle of “physician with parental heart” and understanding the urgent needs, worries and thoughts of the patients, he treats patients and gives primacy to their life safety regardless of their family situation, whether rich or poor, whether their social status is high or low. Under his carefully treatment, each patient can be carefully examined, patiently explained, carefully visited and followed up. From examination to treatment, he always makes a careful budget for patients. If the patient comes from a long way, he will communicate with the relevant departments, endeavor to simplify the treatment process and give timely treatment. All the patients treated by him are touched by his code of “patient first and sincere care”.
